straw bales

From an ecological point of view straw bale construction is in particular favourable because the use of natural materials: wood, straw, clay.
The 'nebraska' method, what implicates stacking of the straw bales, is only applicable for simple structures.
The filling of a wooden structure with straw bales is more appropriate and is therefore the most applied method in Belgium.
Straw bale insulates well thanks the large thickness. Because the regular binding of the straw can’t be controlled sufficiently, straw bale walls gets assigned a weak lambda value of 0.1 W/m2 K for the EPB calculation in Belgium, while the normalized straw bales in Germany gain 0.06 W/m2 K and 0.045 W/m2 K. (O,O38 W/m2 K in Austria)
Inserting the straw does require handiness but no special training, so it is of interest to non–professional builders. Meanwhile the first professional artisans started their business.
Compliance with other essential construction requirements, particularly connections, air tightness and waterproofing demands of this construction more care and support than they initially would suggest. Therefore, this construction method is only cheaper to DIY. Particular let the environmental advantage be the real motivation to choose this method!

For a homebuilder the support of the association in the run-in phase is desirable.
